The Faculty of Recorded Media Arts – Fakultas Seni Media Rekam (FSMR) at the Indonesia Institute of The Arts Yogyakarta – Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta (ISI Yogyakarta) comprises four study programs: Photography, Film and Television, Film and Television Production, and Animation. FSMR at ISI Yogyakarta enjoys an esteemed international reputation, manifested through various accomplishments, including academic collaborations with universities worldwide and outstanding achievements by students in international competitions. The international photography federation has also bestowed recognition upon the faculty’s art gallery, affirming the exceptional quality of artistic works and FSMR’s global presence.

INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC ENGAGEMENTS

FSMR actively fosters international collaborations, partnering with esteemed institutions such as the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) in Australia, Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) at Melbourne University, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Australia, University of Arts Târgu Mureș in Romania, Eszterházy Károly Catholic University in Hungary, Hannover University, Saint-Luc Liège-École Supérieure des Arts in Belgium, Mahasarakham University in Thailand, Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) in Thailand, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in Malaysia, and several other institutions that are in the process of exploring potential collaborations.

International cooperation initiatives take various forms, including public lectures, workshops, photography exhibitions, and film and animation screenings, extending both to FSMR lecturers and students abroad and their counterparts visiting FSMR. Activities have included photography lecturer residencies at CIT, exhibitions and film screenings at VCA Melbourne and Mahasarakham University, workshops and public lectures for FSMR lecturers at Eszterházy Károly Catholic University-Hungary, lecturer exchanges with Saint-Luc Liège-École Supérieure des Arts-Belgium, UiTM student residencies in Yogyakarta, conducting Urban Culture research at Osaka City University, Japan, in collaboration with JSPS, and engaging in numerous other activities, and numerous other enriching experiences.

Another significant academic endeavor involves sending two FSMR students overseas to pursue one semester of study at Arizona State University in the USA and the University of Canterbury in New Zealand through the Indonesian International Mobility Award (IISMA) program. Furthermore, FSMR has proudly served as an official partner of the Australia-Indonesia Cinema Festival (FSAI) in collaboration with the Australian Embassy in Indonesia for the past three years.

INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR STUDENTS

Over recent years, students and alumni have consistently achieved remarkable success on the international stage. Notably, two photographic works created by FSMR Photography program students earned Top-6 distinctions (in the 19-25 age category), and a video work by students from the Film and Television program secured a Top-5 ranking (in the 19-25 age category) at the “Silk Road National Youth International Photography Competition 2021” held in Beijing, China.

Two photography students, Dhofar and Khairunnisa Ramadhan, participated in an international photography residency alongside fellow young photographers from France and Germany within the scenic Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Beyond the French and German participants, this residency also featured mentors from Indonesia, Aji Susanto Anom ( lectures in the Photography study program) and Dr. Irwandi, M.Sn., ( lectures in the Photography study program – Rector of ISI Yogyakarta). This remarkable residency emerged as a collaborative effort between the Indonesian French Institute (IFI), the Goethe-Institute, Wisma German, Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts campus, Polytechnic University of Hauts-de-France, Ostkreuz School of Photography in Berlin, Gobelins School in Paris, Indonesia Institute of The Arts Yogyakarta (ISI Yogyakarta), and Padepokan Fotografi Bromo, offering an extraordinary opportunity to explore the captivating beauty of Bromo and engage with the local community.

Ahmad Fami Nur Khafifi’s Final Project film, “Human vs Elephant,” received acclaim as an Official Selection of The Lift-Off Sessions – First-Time Filmmaker Sessions in June 2020, hosted by The Lift-Off Global Network. Furthermore, it garnered the prestigious ‘Gaia Award’ at the Bozcaada International Festival of Ecological Documentary 2021, organized by Bifed Doc. Another notable achievement involves the film “Tole – Children on the Street” directed by Fuad Hilmi Hirnanda, which received recognition by being shortlisted in the GUFA (Global University Film Award 2018) and clinching 3rd Place in the Filmmaking category of the NBH Award 2018 (Nasser Bin Hamad – International Youth Creativity Award) held in Bahrain. Additionally, several final assignment films, including Muhammad Reza Fahriansyah’s “Come Back Calmly,” have been featured internationally, such as its screening at World Cinema Amsterdam.

In the field of animation, two students from the Animation study program garnered an Honorable Mention at the SWIFF (Student World Impact Film Festival) in Waldwick, New Jersey, USA. They also achieved victory at the UCIFEST – UMN Animation and Film Festival in the International Animation for University Students category. These outstanding achievements underscore FSMR’s commitment to nurturing global talent and its dedication to excellence in the fields of recorded media arts.

“GALERI PANDENG” INTERNATIONAL ART GALLERY EXHIBITION AND RECOGNITION

In recent years, FSMR ISI Yogyakarta has curated international exhibitions, gaining recognition from esteemed international photography organizations. One such collaboration is the “Borderless” International Photo Exhibition, a joint venture between PSA Worldwide and FSMR at ISI Yogyakarta. The Photographic Society of America (PSA) Worldwide, a global organization, unites photography enthusiasts from over 80 countries worldwide, all driven by a shared passion for photography. PSA maintains strong ties with various other photography organizations and communities across the globe. This collaborative effort between PSA Worldwide and Art Photography of Indonesia (API), specifically in partnership with FSMR’s Photography Department, marked the inception of Indonesia’s first PSA international print exhibition. PSA Worldwide is steadfast in its mission to champion the art of photography and inspire the younger generation to channel their creativity through the lens of a camera.

Additionally, FSMR’s renowned photography and audiovisual art gallery, “Galeri Pandeng (Pandeng Gallery)” has gained official international recognition as an affiliate of the prestigious international photography federation, FIAP-Fédération Internationale de l’Art Photographique. Pandeng Gallery has been granted the status of a FIAP Exhibition Center, empowering it to host discussions, seminars, photography exhibitions, and exhibitions of audiovisual arts (spanning photography, videography, film, and animation) with global acknowledgment conferred by FIAP. “Galeri Pandeng” stands as Southeast Asia’s pioneer FIAP Exhibition Center and the fourth in Asia, following China, Iran, and Oman. Its primary role is to serve as a hub for art education, appreciation, achievement, and recreation. Notably, the existence of “Galeri Pandeng” as a FIAP Exhibition Center (FEC) underscores Indonesia’s membership in the UNESCO-affiliated UN non-profit photography organization, alongside 82 other countries spanning five continents.
